Drs. Julian and Raye Richardson Apartments | David Baker + Partners Architects

Formerly a parking lot on the southeast corner of Fulton and Gough streets, the Drs. Julian + Raye Richardson Apartments has risen on one of the sites freed for development by the demolition of the collapsed Central Freeway. This five-story sustainable building provides permanent supportive housing for a very-low-income, formerly homeless population. Four levels of fully equipped studio apartments sit atop neighborhood-serving retail and surround the private landscaped courtyard, which frames an existing neighborhood mural. An open-air staircase connects the courtyard to a second-floor patio and a rooftop deck with seating and garden beds. The stair reduces reliance on the elevator and encourages interaction between residents. The project is part of the Market + Octavia Neighborhood Plan, which aims to create a dense transit-oriented neighborhood with housing over retail and streets that are friendly to pedestrians and bicyclists.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

City living. A recent Home Design Trends Survey by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) indicates a growing desire for living in cities. Higher-density living is one reason for this, as is access to public transportation, multigenerational housing and other factors. This trend will not completely replace the desire for suburban living, but it will require more apartment buildings like this one in San Francisco, designed by David Baker + Partners. It's important to incorporate shared open spaces in multifamily housing.

There tends to be a sense of serenity, there is an openness in staircase space, which is excellent for safety concerns. Common spaces have shrubbery and some green spces.
