Resist the urge to match. An another wonderful aspect of the previous picture is that the tall furniture style piece doesn't "match" anything — not the floors nor the island. This helps to create a layered and collected feel to the space. Ditto for this kitchen, where neither the island now butcherblock counter really match anything else, yet it all works together. If the tall glass front cabinet wall had been stained wood, it this kitchen would fall flat for lack of contrast. Tip: When mixing natural wood tones it's important to consider their base colors — warm tones vs. cool tones. The ashy-golden tones of the island and floors work well with the darker stained wood cabinetry because that cabinetry has a complementary undertone. Both are warm without being orange-y. If there were more orange tones in either, it would get a bit muddy and lack contrast or simply clash and not be appealing to the eye.

The ample and large downstairs kitchen is model of efficiency. It has to be to support a house that has 200 bedrooms! 6. Farmhouse, modern and classic facets. Eclectic can be restrained and subtle. The contrasting elements in this kitchen might not be as noticeable at first glance, but there's a subtle tension between styles. The plaster hood and wood cabinets have a European farmhouse feel, while the built-in hutch wall is very classic and something you see in cottage and bungalow homes across the states. The butcher block–topped island has a humble farmhouse feel, while the ubermodern pendant lights and full-height marble backsplash show off a contemporary element and are all the more interesting because they're placed within the context of these other elements.

Clear Glass Pendant LightsClear glass qualifies for the subdued end of things, but it can also be incredibly sparkly and elegant and sculptural. It's best when it is hand blown and a little wabi-sabi — air bubbles and all.
