Planted Joints
http://www.arterrallp.com

A modern-day retreat with old world sensibilities, this Carmel Valley hacienda minimizes impact on the land through thoughtful site design. Grading allowed the house to nestle into the land and preserve feature trees, and storm runoff is collected to percolate the land.

Arbors and shade trees provide passive solar cooling, while low-water, deer-tolerant native plantings uphold sustainability tenets and complement the home’s architecture.

Love this design, but how do you keep the flagstone clean? - If you cannot power wash with the creepers in between? »

Arterra LLP Landscape Architects The client just sweeps the flagstone or gently hoses it off.

What Houzz contributors are saying:
The antithesis of the previous photo is this walkway, where the joints are planted and sinuous. The way the interconnected network of green ends at the steps, like an exclamation point, is a very nice touch.More: Why There's Beauty in Grid, Column and RowSkinny Windows: Exclamation Points of LightRibbon Windows: Openness, Privacy and Cool Modern Design

integrating the soft plants with the stone in such a way that it makes the eyes move forward to the end. It makes me want to be there.

I like how the planted joints add a natural feel to the outdoor space and help break up the stone walkway with a touch of color.
