Take a walk on the wild side...plant a big, colorful wildflower garden. You'll have cuttings to bring inside all summer long!
added by Marianne Lipanovich to Lay of the Landscape: Natural Garden Style
A field of wildflowers is perhaps the epitome of a natural garden. They can be overpowering next to the house, but if you have a large estate, a difficult-to-landscape hillside or simply a large empty lot in your sight line, consider sprinkling some seeds and seeing what comes up.Tip: When planting a large number of perennials, annuals or bulbs, scatter the seeds in drifts to mimic how they grow in nature.
added by J. Peterson Garden Design to Texas Gardener's August Garden Checklist
Plant wildflower seeds: Bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis) is the state flower, so many of us want to add it to our gardens. Late August is the perfect time to begin sowing seeds of bluebonnets and other wildflowers such as Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera), Indian paintbrush (Castilleja spp.), winecup (Callirhoe digitata) and pink evening primrose (Oenothera speciosa). Choose a sunny site, loosen up the soil (adding soil amendments if necessary) and plant seeds 1/2 inch deep. Water in and keep watered regularly throughout fall.

Companion plants: Sunflowers combine well with other flowering perennials, reseeding annuals and meadow plants. Consider Salvia spp., Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), Sedum 'Autumn Joy,' and ornamental grasses like Mexican feather grass (Nasella tenuissima), Maiden grass (Miscanthus sinensis) and Inland sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium). Be sure to check with your local experts at trusted garden centers or extension offices on recommended annuals and perennials for your area, as some plants may be considered invasive in particular parts of the country.
