Buy an expandable dining table. This doesn't have to mean a stupid cheap table. Our sturdy farmhouse table has two leaves, and we've had it against a small wall in student graduate housing and out to its full length in a large dining room. We also focused on the design of the chairs. No matter what its size, we have loved every meal around it.

the formal yet relaxed setting. I would probably warm it up a bit more by adding a rug under the table or framing the tile under the table with wood.
