Our clients wanted a serene and comfortable, yet formal living room. Symmetry is a wonderful way to create a very balanced, and consequently, soothing space. A pair of transitional camel-back sofas flank the fireplace, and extend an invitation to sit around the fire. Other “pairs” of draperies, chairs, and ottomans around the room create order and “organize” the space, all while giving it a slightly formal feel. We selected the mostly monochromatic color palate for its restful quality…color can be jarring. To bring back some excitement, we went against the grain by painting the trim and molding a very dark chocolate brown. We know this room is a success, because unlike most living rooms, it’s used every day. Photo by Beth Singer.

What color and brand is the flooring? - We have dark trim and kitchen cabinets and are having a difficult time finding the right floor color. »
Cynthia Taylor-Luce Bring home a selection of flooring samples and view them in your space. Choose a wide variety, and you'll quickly rule out many of them, and you'll see what appeals to you. You could consult a designer, or you could contact a flooring company that has a shop-at-home service for convenience. Good luck.
Dunlap Design Group, LLC I had the color custom mixed, so sorry, I don't have a number for you. I just kept telling them "darker, muddier..." Best regards, Charles
Another great way to use black paint is on your base and crown molding. If this space had white trim it would not be nearly as dramatic. The black accent frames the room and anchors the space. It also creates a departure from a builder's standard finishes and gives your home a customized and tailored look.
Choosing a white ceiling doesn't mean the moldings have to be white too. This dark chocolate brown molding is quite dramatic against the white ceiling and beige wall. It also complements the espresso furnishings and frames around the art.
