The entryway is Holloway's favorite part of the house. "Our home faces the south, so light pours in and bounces off the dark hardwoods and green door," she says. Darnell and Holloway papered the entry in wallpaper from Home Depot, hung a eye-catching Moravian Star light fixture, and accented the area with an antique console table and a mirror from Ballard Designs.

Floral wallpaper, curvaceous lamps and a handbag draped on a doorknob give this home a subtly feminine flair that's not too much girliness for the men of the house.

Put it all together. Blend your two style words together for a tailor-made mix. All rustic wood and drab linen might be a bit too heavy for your taste, and all modern too spare, but put them together and a natural balance ensues. Case in point: Floral wallpaper, a simple wooden table and a natural fiber rug lay a rustic foundation, while a pair of shapely lamps and a ruffled mirror keep things feeling fresh and current.

Deborah Needleman in her book The Perfectly Imperfect Home compares the entryway to "the butler we don't have," which is a wonderful way to think of this space. Under ideal conditions, it should graciously greet us at the door, find a place for our belongings and dole them out again when we leave. Style notes: Because the entryway is usually a small space, it can be fun to be a bit more adventurous in this area. Try wallpaper, a bold mirror, a shapely pendant light, or all three.
