This mid-century modern home had great potential and was in need of updates to live up to the potential. The un-functionally large and closed off kitchen was transformed into a space that is functional for the family and fun for entertaining. The space is now open and dynamic with modern elements and the right proportions to fill the large space. The island became the bridge to pull together the work triangle, create seating for casual entertaining as well as capture the needed support post.

What do you pur in FRONT of the compost pail? - It hangs down so deep I am trying to figure out what to put in front of it. Would LOVE to our the trash pullout there but with the required 12" of clearance from the compost pail the trash pullout won't fit »
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B There is a shelf in the cabinet and it is just below the compost bin. So, there is a storage space there. Perfect spot for biodegradable compost bags!
What has been your client feedback on the Blanco and the Hafele composting products? - I just found the photo showing the Blanco Solon system installed. (Love the backsplash, by the way.) I have been trying to get clients to try this product out but no one seems willing to take a chance on it. Can you give me an honest review of both the Blanco and the Hafele? I also posted it on my blog today so if you would be willing to put your comments there as well that would be doubly awesome! (Link below.) Thanks in advance.

Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B Hello Theresa,
My clients love the function of the in counter compost system. The placement is between the trash & recycle cans (to the left in the corner) and the espresso machine (they are avid coffee drinkers). The compost bin makes emptying the coffee grinds easy. This kitchen has plenty of counter space so the countertop functionality is not compromised by the compost bin. Some clients are concerned of loosing counterspace in a small kitchen. But, keep in mind, these units are flush, so you could place a cutting board or tray right over the top with no problem.
This unit is the Hafele version and has a large rubber ring, which keeps it sealed. By looking at the photos of the Blanco, it has more stainless and less rubber. I always feel that stainless is cleaner than rubber....just my perception. You would want to look for one that fits nice and tight to avoid the little pesky fruit flys!
I personally have a compost bin that sits on the counter and it is constantly in the way in my small kitchen. It would be so much more functional for my space to have an in counter compost (as long as I had the cabinet space for it to drop into).
Hope that helps!
Warm Regards,
Kayron Brewer, CKD
Project Partners Design, Inc. Thanks much! It does. I also have the bin that sits on counter which is why I would really like to get clients to move in this direction!
Kayron Brewer, CKD, CBD / Studio K B There are two brands, Hafele and Blanco. Hafele capacity is 3 gallons. Blanco capacity is 1.8 gallons. Lids are designed to keep out odors. As a Kitchen professional, I can offer them for purchase by clients.

- include in-counter compost container, accessible from outside?
A space-saving, under-the-counter compost bin makes it easy to collect kitchen scraps and reduces garbage headed for the landfill.
