I love the colors in this photo, the lavender plane at the bottom, the upright terra-cotta pots with tall grasses, the partial adobe framing with fencing that disappears against the background. It looks like redwoods in the background, so there's probably a soaring element to the space that's missing from the frame of the photograph. Someone did a brilliant job with this.

plants - Hi, This is truly beautiful. What are the ornamental grasses in the containers ? What variety of lavender have you selected? Lavendula angustifolia ? Thanks

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Botanical name: LavandulaCommon name: LavenderUSDA zones: 5-10Water requirement: Regular water until established; then low water needsSoil requirement: Requires excellent drainageSun requirement: Prefers full sunMature size: 1 to 3 feet high, 1- to 3-foot spreadGrowth rate: Slow. Trim lightly in spring to maintain a compact shape (old wood rarely produces new growth).Tolerances: Drought tolerant and deer resistantEnvironmental benefits: Attracts birds, hummingbirds and butterflies; makes for a wonderful bath and culinary addition. When designing a garden with lavender, put its environmental needs first. Site it in full sun with great drainage. The fastest way to kill lavender is to overwater it. Once you've found the perfect site, the only question becomes whether you should mass or mix this fabulous plant.
Samantha Schoech added this to Color Guide: How to Work With Lavender
Lavender OutsideThe real deal. Most of the lavender color you see outside is going to come from lavender flowers and other landscaping plants, like catmint, echium and wisteria.
Margie Grace - Grace Design Associates added this to Southern California Gardener's October Checklist
Plant Mediterranean natives. Fall weather provides the perfect planting conditions for plants from other Mediterranean climate regions, too. Many plants of Australian, South African and Mediterranean origin will benefit from fall planting. Look for lavenders, sages, aloes, agaves and Dianellas, among hundreds of other candidates, for October planting.
LuAnn Brandsen added this to Garden Color: How to Landscape With Purple
4. Set a MoodLavender is thought to enhance feelings of inspiration and insight, making it an ideal choice for a contemplative garden.
Planting and care: Choose a spot in full sun with very good drainage; add sand or compost before planting to increase drainage. Lavender does best in poor soil. Set plants 1 to 4 feet apart, depending on their eventual height and spread. If you live in a humid climate, be sure to allow for plenty of air circulation between them. You can also add a mulch of sand or pea gravel.
3. Use appropriate plants and group them according to their water needs. Drought-tolerant, native or well-adapted plants should form the bulk of your plant palette. Plants needing more water, such as edibles, and container plants should be grouped together for more efficient irrigation. Work with your site’s characteristics to determine where hydrozones (watering zones) make the most sense. For example, a south-facing slope is an ideal place to group plants that prefer good drainage and have low water requirements. A low-lying area that stays damp can be a separate zone for plants with moderate and higher water needs.

LAVENDER Water regularly during the first year to establish the plants; in subsequent years let the plants dry out completely before watering again. Add a light fertilizer in spring when growth starts. If you're growing it in a container, choose one that’s just an inch or two larger than the root ball, eventually transplanting into a 12- to 16-inch container. Provide sufficient drainage, and water and fertilize somewhat more frequently than for a plant in the ground.
