This cozy fireplace, built into the home's 12-inch thick adobe walls, was created into a snug sitting area with a 1940s Danish chair, French vintage table, and a unique Gio Ponti light fixture above the mantle.

Minimal objects can provide an equal sense of equilibrium and impact. In this example, a small group of objects is juxtaposed with a fixture at a slightly higher height.

A minimalist statement can also work on the mantel. Try grouping a cluster of like-colored pottery to one side. The visual weight of the grouping to one side helps create a modern vibe. A great-looking pendant balances the vignette.

Or go minimalist. That doesn't mean barren. It means a grouping of thoughtfully selected objects and no main art or mirror piece above.

Wood. This streamlined piece of wood used as a mantel is perfect for this retro interior. The one pictured here is referred to as a floating shelf, as there are no visible brackets supporting it. Such harmony! Design tip: Correct installation is of the utmost importance for this type of mantel. Since there are no brackets, it needs strong internal supports to be able to hold heavy objects.
