Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory

Margot Hartford photo

This is a home in the Willow Glen area of San Jose. This is a pre fab conservatory. I chose the honed black absolute granite and white marble to give it a "Great Gatsby" look. That was my inspiration.
The chaise was an existing piece that we recovered in an indoor outdoor fabric. The chairs were custom and also have indoor outdoor fabric on them.

what size area rug will look best? - I just had a sunroom that is 12 ' by 15' built. . I am having the black and white tiles installed. What size tiles should I request? 12 by 12 ft or 18 by 18 ' ? Also I want to use an oriental area rug as an accent. Should I use 8' by 5'. I don't want to cover all the tiles but want the lookt to be proportional. Thank you for your reponse and time.

The plant was from a local nursery. The plant is still alive after 6 years! The ceramic planter is an Italian antique.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Hallmarks of a real conservatory include glass walls and a glass ceiling. The decor is lush and elegant. Note this chandelier and cushy upholstered chairs.

The black and white checkerboard floor first appeared in paintings in the 15th century. A hundred years later, Louis XIV's architect Charles Le Brun used black and white checkerboard on the ground-floor landing of the queen's staircase at Versailles. It's an obvious choice for an entrance hall but looks great in this stunning conservatory too.

How to Care for Your Kentia PalmTemperature: 50 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 20 degrees Celsius) is ideal.Light: It prefers areas with partial shade, not full sun. It will tolerate a somewhat dark corner indoors. Water: Water only when the uppermost soil layer is dry. Mist the plant to simulate humidity and to prevent spider mite infestation, which can occur with dust buildup. Overwatering will cause root rot, and underwatering can cause yellow tips that will turn to brown. If the stalks and leaves are not standing upright, as they should, try a deep watering, assuming there is sufficient drainage. Soil: Sandy with good drainage, though Kentia is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Because the plant is very slow growing, you will most likely keep it in the same container for many years. Replace old, spent soil (above the root ball) occasionally.Feeding: Apply an 18-18-18 slow-release specialized palm fertilizer according to the package instructions once or twice a year, in the summer and spring.General: Avoid repotting, though if it’s necessary, be very cautious when handling the root ball. The Kentia is a slow-growing palm with fragile roots. Other ConsiderationsAir purification: Kentia is effective at cutting VOC levels — toxins that are released by cleaning supplies, printers and other household items. Pets: Kentia is nontoxic.Natural environment: Lord Howe Islands, east of Australia, where the single-trunk tree grows relatively slowly, reaching an average mature height of 20 feet. Long stalks produce bunches of white flowers, which turn into small, red, egg-shaped fruits.A note on identity: The Kentia palm can look similar to the Parlor palm, and is often mistakenly called by that name. While they both make good houseplants, the Parlor palm will remain quite small and is generally used in a pot on a tabletop, while the Kentia can become quite tall.

I love the open feel of this conservatory. This would be a great way to enjoy my huge yard.

BLACK AND WHITE CHECKERBOARD. the only place i think i'd like this. It's an obvious choice for an entrance hall but looks great in this stunning conservatory too.
