is quartzite expensive - can you give me an estimated price per sf for quartzite. I have no idea about the price range of the white quartzite when compared to other slabs of stone. How abut the Taj mahal color (white)? may be called different names. »
Hi Rebekah,
When combining different edges like this one, what do you do about edges and corners? For instance, with an ogee on my leather top island, my fabricator suggested rounded corners and rounded radius for bump outs (sink) and then on the polished granite perimeter with the straight edge, we will have straight corners and bump outs (sink, range). I am using different materials on the island as well. I am worried there will be too many differences side by side. Any rules in design when mixing edges? »
TanCalGal You can look through photos of these kitchen-granite-counters & see what you learn. I do not know if there is an exact rule (& innovative designers are always breaking rules), but I would not choose too many different finishes for a kitchen without professional help. One thought, if you're having different wall finishes (like the brick & marble above) I think ending at an inside corner looks best. http://www.houzz.com/kitchen-granite
Hi Rebekah,
Do you think a tall kitchen faucet like ht eone in this picture would be ok in front of a 6 foot wide tranditional window? I was looking at Kraus 1602. »

Are cabinets distressed? Having a hard time finding the right shade for cabinetry, how does someone come up with a custom colour?
flauritsen Just to clarify -- Is it granite, marble or Quartize? They are 3 different materials, correct? This is actually quartize, is it not? With the look of marble, it is natural stone (unlike quartz) but even hardier than granite and better in the kitchen than even granite, is that right? I'm just combining what I'm learning from you and others on quartize. Need the calm of a neutral marble but for the kitchen with 3 messy kids. Thanks for any clarification you can give me!
Ogee. I love contrasting a traditional ogee edge on an island with a more contemporary square edge on the perimeter walls. It's another timeless classic that works well in traditional kitchens.
Love the look of white marbles like Calacatta or Cararra but afraid of staining and maintenance of marble countertops? A full-height slab of marble as your backsplash allows you to have your cake and eat it too.

Full height stone slabs. There's something about the beauty of natural stone, in particular white marbles that just steal hearts. It's timeless and what's even more interesting is that is works equally as well in a modern kitchen as it does in a traditional one.
Tip: Make sure to visit the stoneyard or warehouse and pick your actual slabs. Not all stone is the same, even though the name might be. And each lot number can have different character, veining and color.
