This Westlake site posed several challenges that included managing a sloping lot and capturing the views of downtown Austin in specific locations on the lot, while staying within the height restrictions. The service and garages split in two, buffering the less private areas of the lot creating an inner courtyard. The ancillary rooms are organized around this court leading up to the entertaining areas. The main living areas serve as a transition to a private natural vegetative bluff on the North side. Breezeways and terraces connect the various outdoor living spaces feeding off the great room and dining, balancing natural light and summer breezes to the interior spaces. The private areas are located on the upper level, organized in an inverted “u”, maximizing the best views on the lot. The residence represents a programmatic collaboration of the clients’ needs and subdivision restrictions while engaging the unique features of the lot.

HeartWood Fine Windows and Doors To be clear- we did not manufacture this particular door. But we have manufactured many similar entry systems, most in SA (genuine) Mahogany. We have done thousands of custom wood doors over the last few decades- most in the Northeast with our natorious winters- with with almost no problems. We've achieved this by sticking with time proven mortise and tenon joinery as well as the best quality Genuine Mahogany or other quality hardwoods appropriate for exterior use. The knock on wood (no pun intended) usually comes from inferior materials (thin applied veneers and such), less stable (and less expensive) woods and inadequite joinery. That $800 or $900 hardwood slab at the discount home center may look good in the store but check back after 4 or 5 rough winters. Stick with a good quality custom manufacturer and, with just a bit of proper mantainance, you should have an entry you will be pleased with for many, many years.
Love the feel of this house. What is the name, type & vendor of the rock siding? Thanks - Building a house in the pacific N.W. It has some rock work and I am looking for something light and different than what is normally found in our area. »
