EW: In the early stages of a design project, what is the process you go through to create your unique style? TF: Most every design idea I have stems from a colorful or patterned fabric that I have fallen in love with. I typically create fabric and color “stories” for a project first just to get my creative juices flowing and then go back to the beginning and enhance the architecture and floor plans to complement the design scheme. In addition to color, symmetry plays a prominent role in Fairley's design. Each item within this vignette is beautifully duplicated to create a look that is balanced and pleasing to the eye.

Blue and orange. Don't even get me started on this color combination. Okay, I guess I got myself started. But, seriously, is there anything more fresh and full of cheer? Just like the living room pictured, Rag and Bone's spring 2012 collection incorporated blue and orange, with some well-placed touches of pattern and metallics.

On the flip side, because orange can be a hard color to wear, fashion stylists often recommend working it in as an accessory vs. a main piece. This rule also works in interiors. Depending on a room's light, structure, size, etc., orange as a dominant color may be overwhelming. In this case, orange throw pillows or side tables will introduce the color and still make a statement.

If you’re having a few committal issues with a candy-corn color scheme infused into a room through paint or large furnishings, consider accessories. Top a white couch with orange throw pillows and flank it with orange side tables. For the yellow? A bunch of inexpensive, fresh tulips!

1. 1 Pattern + 1 Solid. This is a simple mix that can have a big impact. When using a strong pairing of opposite colors such as orange and blue, all you need for a backdrop is cream or white.

Even when the colors and patterns are lively, there is a inexplicable sense of harmony in a room that is based in symmetry. The matching side tables and lamps ground this conversation area, and even the reflection of the wall art in the coffee table adds to the symmetry.
