Niki Papadopoulos This is a beautiful rug, so fresh and forward. I would venture to guess it was custom made for this particular project. Here are a few rug vendors who have the capabilities to create something like this:
EW: What sort of elements would you say most defines or influences your simple yet fresh signature look?
TF: Have I mentioned fabrics? Pattern and color are key to my style. But it is probably the fact that I use furnishings with a very traditional scale and form as the basis for the room that make my spaces have appeal across styles and gender. This also makes my spaces have a timeless quality. So even if you decide to recover furnishings in a less colorful or trendy fabric down the line, you have still made a sound investment in a good timeless piece of furniture. It just makes sense.
Fairley put a playfully spin on this traditional kid-friendly family room. Time-honored silhouettes have been updated with unexpected mustard, green, and teal hues. The wavy rug in like colors add a vibrant energy to a new classic mix.
Traditionally, people have chosen to have silhouettes cut of family members because it was cheaper then hiring an artist to paint a proper portrait. Now the silhouette has gone contemporary. Here three brightly colored silhouettes of children serve as pop art in a space that's all about pops of color.
1. Happy Chic. When you have a rug this fabulous, you do not want to cover it up and interrupt its lines. Thus, a clear coffee table is the perfect choice. In addition, the curves on the table mimic the wavy lines on the rug.
5. Does it work with other colors in your home? When you are in the process of decorating a room, it is a wonderful idea to carry a small envelope or folder with paint and fabric swatches when you go out shopping. Being able to hold up a swatch of your wall color or the fabric on your sofa is invaluable when you are looking for coordinating pieces.Don't have swatches? At the very least, take a few photos of the room in good light and bring those with you on shopping trips. It will avoid many headaches down the road when a color or print clashes and you have to make returns or eat the cost.
Have some fun. The personality of these homeowners was injected into this room by Tobi Fairley Interior Design. "They have three children and wanted the presence of the children to be shown in a fun way throughout their home," says Tiffany Burgess, who works with Tobi Fairley. "These silhouettes, which are available through Jonathan Adler, were a way to bring in color and give the space a fun, fashion-forward vibe while still making it about family and tradition."
Keep it alive with five — that's my rule of thumb when using throw pillows on sofas. Two on each corner and one in the middle are just enough for someone to get comfy. A sofa packed with more than five cushions can look messy and be difficult to sit on comfortably. In this space the beige walls get some great color from the rug, simple artwork and playful pillows.
