Uptown Loft

Sometimes the bones of the building are a designer’s biggest enemy; in this case they are a celebrated feature. This Upper West Side apartment combination took advantage of great eastern exposures as well as newly exposed brick to create an open loft-like space. The existing masonry wall and its punctuations served as a natural passage between public and private. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by the large open public kitchen and living area. Open shelving between the kitchen and masonry serves as screen and display while also suggesting an axis of circulation. Sliding panels along the masonry wall wait for future art and serve as doors/shades from western light to the bedrooms beyond. The master suite and guest space beyond are balanced symmetrically and connected by a series of translucent windows and a continuous floating display plane. A balance of highly textural surfaces and a clean white palette are the backdrop of a space made to highlight a beautiful personal collection of art and artifacts. The uninterrupted open space, along busy Columbus Avenue, somehow feels serene.
