The owners of this residence wanted a rooftop deck and garden. The design concept was to create a calming space with textured landscaping. Program requirements included a kitchen, lounge, sundeck, and open space for entertaining.
The long, narrow footprint of the building defined the layout. Dining and kitchen areas are sited to take advantage of an adjacent tree canopy that provides dappled sunlight and protection from prevailing winds. The sundeck is sunken to provide privacy. The lounge is located on a platform, enabling views of the cityscape, and is bordered by cascading planters that create intimate moments as counterpoints to the open space. A sculptural pergola conceals lighting and speakers.
A unique detail is the use of Plexiglas risers on the steps to the lounge. During the day, the Plexiglas risers create the aesthetic of a floating lounge. At night, lighting concealed behind the risers creates a linear light box, a detail that is both artistic and functional. Landscaping provides a visual connection across the 100ft rooftop. Drought tolerant plants were selected for beauty, texture, and their ability to survive in the microclimate of an urban roof deck. The plants absorb rainwater and require minimal maintenance.

Trees - Love the feel and scale of this project! Wondering if the trees are a dwarf Birch of some sort being on a roof top? I was looking for something with the same look but with mature height of under 20 feet....
Thank you for any info!!! »
dSPACE Studio Ltd Hi Claudia, These are 8' tall Betula Nigra River Birch. A good local nursery should be able to steer you to a species of tree that will work for your project and application. Good Luck with your project!

Thanks for appreciating our work. The stair riser detail was constructed pre-LED everything and the light source utilized here is a custom made cold-cathode fixture. For a project like this today you may wish to consider LED. Both LED and Cold Cathode are energy efficient with extremely long lamp life. Good luck with your projects - Kevin / dSPACE Studio www.dspacestudio.com
The city view here just barely seen from this angle is Chicago. The deck has wonderful lighting for nighttime, which is, in my opinion, the best time to enjoy a city view.
