Feldman poured concrete integral floors throughout the home. The material is hard-wearing, low-maintenance, and helps maintain the home's temperature. Not much wood was used, but Feldman incorporated some to soften the look of the concrete. Douglas fir was used on the ceiling, and the loft is made with reclaimed birch. Although this was the first home that he had built for his parents, it wasn't Feldman's first project with his dad. When he was fresh out of grad school, one of his first projects was to work on a library for his dad in his parents' home in Palo Alto, Calif. "My dad is a bit of a book hoarder," Feldman says, "and it just killed my mother that he had these endless piles of books lying around the house."
