Dresser Homes It's actually not painted brick. It is a product from Boral Bricks called "Pastel Cote", which is a product meant to go over brick. It's thicker than paint...almost like stucco. I think they may have discontinued this product however.

Don Duffy Architecture You could use plywood. You need to be concerned about the joist deflection as much as the subfloor. Make sure you install a water proof membrane and some drian matt product. Water will get thru the tile and settign bed. That moisture has to have some place to go. It is best if the sub floor is pitched do drain. The moisture wicking out will bring lime deposits with it. This can be unsightly after awhile. Careful detailing is needed here.
I do not think a thin set application on plywood is very permanent. Tiles can become loose with time or by freeze thaw or by deflection of structure. Stone on a slab is a superior way to go. There are thin set systems available like Mape or Shlueter
I would recommend you consult an engineer. There is much to think about and the investment should be a carefully planned.

rpa2012 Thank you kindly for the advise. Yes, it seems that the task requires much more planning than I would've anticipated, since this is to be done outside. When you say slab, are you talking about concrete slabs like the sidewalk slabs that you would stack side by side? Clearly that would require steel pan support as well as Dresser Homes mentioned to hold the weight.

I think the other alternative would be to just use a water proof membrane with proper pitching for the water to drain and then use the Synthetic (Trex type material) planks for the flooring. I would have preferred a proper floor like in a room, but that seems to be too much work. I will consult with an Engineer anyway.
