The client did not do a diagonal upper cabinet in the corner because she did not like the look of it that close to the hood.

The stain is from Minwax. It is a mixture of 1/2 Dark Walnut and 1/2 Special Walnut. Then 3 coats of Satin finish poly.

I think the 48" upper cabinet option would be better. Yes, 48" is a tall door, but they can put magnetic latches at the top and bottom to help prevent the door from warping. I'm not sure the 30" with the 18" stacked on top would look as good. That's just my opinion though....you might have your kitchen designer draw it and it look just fine.
These cabinets were Crystal and Shiloh. Good Luck!

So if I understand you correctly, you want to take your upper cabinets to the ceiling and still leave room from crown molding to be applied to the cabinets.
There are lots of variables in play here. Are you buying manufactured cabinets which only come in preset sizes or are you using a local custom cabinet maker who can make the boxes any size you want?
Your base cabinets plus counters will finish at 36" plus 18" for the backsplash area leaves you 54" for your upper cabinets (108" minus 54"). I'm not sure if you have enough room for double upper cabinets and crown molding. I would probably do 42" upper cabinets and then add a 12" filler at the top running to the ceiling and then apply the crown molding to the filler. I guess you could do 36" uppers with another 12" upper on top, but I'm not sure how good that would look.
You probably need your kitchen cabinet supplier to draw out a couple options for you and see how they look.
These ceilings are 10' by the way.
Good luck!

Kitchen supplier suggested a 30" upper with 18" upper on top leaving approx 4.5"-6" for crown. We are considering the bottom wall cabinets to be a solid raised panel and upper on top of 18", or 15", or 12" (depending on height of lower wall cabinet) to be glass with a French door mullion style all around perimeter of kitchen. We hope to also consider some lighting in the upper glass cabinets. Your design expertise and thoughts are greatly appreciated. We currently have existing 42" upper cabinets with std crown and 9-12" of open space above. Are we making a mistake to consider this "stacked" new look of double cabinets for our kitchen? Advantages/disadvantages?

I'm pretty sure the hardware came from Top Knobs, but I don't know the specific model number. I believe the finish is satin nickel.
Yes, I think you can mix the finishes within the kitchen. For example, the faucet shown here is polished nickel but the pendant lights are more of a brushed finish. Most people just to everything in satin nickel to make it easier, but I love the look of a polished nickel faucet, especially with marble counters. I hope this helps...

The island cabinetry is from Crystal Cabinetry. The wood is cherry and the stain is called "blackstone". The perimeter cabinets are white paint with a pewter highlight.
The floors are 5" oak, site finished with a Minwax stain of 1/2 Dark Walnut and 1/2 Special Walnut and 3 coats of poly.

Gosh, I really don't know whether it is any more or less porous or shows stains more or less than other marbles. I will say that I was in the house recently and after 6 years it has help up very well. As a general rule, I always recommend a honed finish over a polished as it shows marks less. There is a great Ideabook on marble counters here on Houzz. You should check it out.

Hmmm. That's a tough question without seeing the floor. I think of slate as being somewhat rustic and wouldn't pick painted white cabinets to go with it. I would see stained cabinets.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the counters and how they look against the floors. People worry about that all the time and it's really not an issue in my opinion. If you have a sample of your floor slate, just take it with you to one of the counter top distributers and search for a granite that seems to complement it. There are so many different options out there, I'm sure you can find something you like. You might also look at Quartz as an option too. Good luck!

@ericairwin: Yes, we are talking about the same thing. Built-in refrigerators are 24" deep so that they are flush with the surrounding cabinetry. The term "integrated" refers to the unit have cabinetry panels so that it is "integrated" into your cabinetry. Just to make it a little more confusing, Sub-Zero also has a line of "fully integrated" refrigerators where it allows you to fully conceal all of the metal hinges and hardware and so forth and make for a cleaner look.

Ok thanks so much for explaining it better!! A friend has a Miele integrated fridge and here in Canada they are about $8500. I was hoping to have somewhat the same look but with a much lower price point. I was thinking of going with an all freezer and all fridge idea (side by side) because for our kitchen reno we have a wide space but its not deep. Oh and we have 4 kids so we have lots of food:) Though more fridge is the most important since we don't eat a lot of frozen things but I thought to balance it out look-wise I might need it that way.

I think if you center the fixture on the island and hang is such that the bottom is +/- 36" above the island, you will be fine. That leaves you 24" of drop for the fixture.
A round fixture would probably be okay, but I think you are on the right track thinking rectangular.

Typically, the upcharge is around 15% for inset doors. However, there is one manufacturer, Shiloh Cabinetry, who does not charge extra for inset. You might want to check them out. http://www.shilohcabinetry.com/

I am a Shiloh dealer as well and it's a fantastic company. It has quickly became our #1 cabinet line in just two years. Great value with inset as Gary said! Gary, this is a gorgeous kitchen. I love it when clients aren't afraid to go up to such a tall ceiling. It's not for the storage...it's for an amazing look!!!

Our kitchen is very similar in the way the blind corner is a small cabinet next to the stove--I'm wondering if you can tell me what size cabinet you used for the base blind corner? How did you deal with the dead space? Are there pullouts in the cabinet?

Thank you so much! I'm horrible at design and wasn't sure about mixing finishes, but it looks beautiful here. This is my favorite kitchen on Houzz.. We are going to have chrome fixtures and hardware in our very traditional kitchen. The stove hood and fridge will be false-front like the fridge in this kitchen. If you don't mind, I'd love your opinion. What are your thoughts on mixing finishes?

Even when they are sealed, marble counters are very easily "etched" by anything with acidic that comes into contact with them. This includes lemon and lime juice, wine, soda, vinegar, apple juice, and many others. If you have a window in the kitchen which casts a natural light on the surface, the marks are very noticeable. If you could visit someone who has marble in their kitchen and take a look at their "used" counters, it might be helpful. Most of my clients who have white marble get them buffed and polished and resealed every year or so.

It is a Kitchenaid with overlay panels. Personally, I prefer the Subzero. It is probably a few thousand dollars more but I think it is worth it. Especially if you are looking for a built-in look. And their new model has an ice/water dispenser in the door now.

Bill Fry Construction - Wm. H. Fry Const. Co.
Dear Houzz Fans:
When doing a kitchen remodel, consider purchasing truly custom cabinets that have been made by a local shop. Then you won't have to deal with fillers as mentioned above or seams where you might not normally expect to see them. My GC husband installs both modular cabinets and custom ones (Kraftmaid falls into the modular category) and the results for custom are consistently better.

My sink is a 30" Whitehaus with a 33" apron cabinet from Kraftmaid, in the Parkdale line of semi-custom cabinets. (I just measured it.) The Bondo filler that I mentioned above resulted in a perfect finish: I applied it, sanded the finish and kept applying and sanding until I built up the filled-in space to be flush with the cabinet. Then I used the expensive Kraftmaid paint over it and the match is unbelievable. It's perfect, and I'm one of those people whose almost impossible to work with because I'm so picky. I had all of my granite pulled out and replaced, and my floors all re-sanded at no cost because each job was significantly flawed. Of course, you have to be committed to putting lots of TLC into the work if you're going to do it yourself and have it come out right.

@sairac. If there are wall cabinets flanking the 36" cooktop, I would probably make the insert 30" wide at most. That would leave 3" of tile on each side (outside the border). As far as the height goes, I would keep the same 3" of tile outside the border on the top and bottom. You also should keep in mind the size of the tikes you are using for the border. If they are 6", then the dimensions shd be a multiple of 6" so as to avoid a little cut piece.
You should have your contractor or tile installer draw the design on the drywall so you can visualize it.

Inset. Although this style tends to be one of the most expensive on the market, it's a classic look that'll last for generations. The inset door gets its name because it is set inside of the cabinet frame — typical cabinet doors rest on the outside of the frame. The door is designed and constructed with extremely precise measurements so that it nests inside the frame and opens and closes properly, even when the wood expands and contracts. This door style usually requires exposed hinges rather than the typical concealed hinges of other door styles that are included in the cost of the cabinet box. Make sure that your budget takes this into account — two hinges per door will quickly add up.
