Wendy Wang check if the ceiling joists are perpendicular to the wall with a stud finder. (via my handy husband)

Wendy Wang if they are perpendicular, then you peel back the sheetrock to figure out if its structural/load bearing

2. Think open living. Where possible, clear the space and get rid of unnecessary furniture. Create more open floor space for playing, and the room will feel larger and less complicated.

Concerned about going smaller? You may not need as much space as you think, just a smarter space. A small home that is open, with good flow and proper furniture placement can actually feel larger than its square footage suggests, so it's possible you just haven't toured the right space for you.
