The wood version of weathering steel (the oxidization of steel to provide a protective barrier) is the Japanese tradition of shou-sugi-ban. Burning cedar or some other wood gives it a charcoal barrier that is rot and fire resistant ... and very distinctive looking.

This handsome and powerful cladding has gained global appeal, with the treatment being applied to a wide variety of wood. While any species can be charred, the resulting appearance will vary. A softwood, like the Japanese sugi (cypress), has prominent growth rings that result in a highly textured surface, whereas charring hardwood leads to an evenly blackened surface.

I love how the look of the weathering steel has those rigid edges and minor creases. It feels as if I could just put my hand on the screen and touch it for myself. These are one of the texture pictures that I can already feel once I "touch" it. Some of the other photos I have to look at it for a while before I can "touch" it. Though this design gives me the pleasure of not waiting 40 minutes before I can imagine myself feeling this.
