Flax used to be one of the most important textile fibres in the Netherlands. Currently it is farmed in much smaller quantities and is mainly shipped to China to be processed further. From the seed to the end product, the flax in this lamp comes from the Netherlands. It is made in collaboration with traditional rope maker Touwslagerij Steenbergen.
Using the flax from a Dutch farmhouse, the filaments are spun in flax yarns, after which these are twisted into strands. The fresh and innovative approach of Meindertsma to the very old techniques as spinning, weaving, twining and splitting has resulted in an astonishing collection of different objects.
