Bertram Architects The floor and the rainscreen are both ipe. Originally our client was going to let them "gray out" in the california sun but has since changed is mind and is going to oil them so that they maintain the rich color you see here.

Annie Thornton Maybe this will need to be recategorized, but it actually is the exterior of a spectacular Hollywood Hills writer's studio — perhaps an outdoor shower is part of the creative working process.

For the exterior, Bertram and Mitchell tried something new and installed a rain screen system. The outer facade has a 1/4-inch space between each board, making it permeable. The Ipe wood will expand and contract with the changes in weather and moisture, so the boards were placed on a clip system that allows them to move. The air circulation makes for a healthier wood and helps the building stay cooler.
