These are Annabelle Hydrangeas and are the best for handling Zone 3 conditions. The more protection they have the better though. The problem is that the flowers are heavier than the stems can support. so in the fall you need to cut them back by at least a foot to encourage stronger branching habits. Generally by the 3rd year they are strong enough to keep the flowers erect a in this picture.
