Plant - What is the creeping plant growing on the fence »
· Comment · 6 weeks ago
debora carl landscape design The creeping plant on the fence is Ficus repens or creeping fig. Once it attaches to the wall, it is very difficult to remove and leaves marks on the wall, so make sure you are happy with it's placement before planting it.

mgreed7 I actually believe it is purple salvia

debora carl landscape design if you look at the leaves of the plant you will notice that they are grass like, in this case a Liriope, and not the leaves of a salvia species. I am the landscape designer that designed and planted this area .

Susie Guidry Vine is creeping fig, ficus pumila. I don't think it would grow in zone 4 or 5.

memedebit Creeping fig gets very invasive over time so make sure you want it on your walls. It is very pretty.

What Houzz contributors are saying:
added by Marianne Lipanovich to Lay of the Landscape: French Garden Style
Stone surfaces provide the underpinnings. Gravel paths and stone terraces are hallmarks of French garden design. A gravel path is one of the easiest ways to start your landscape. In this case, the gravel defines the path area, while the inset stepping-stones make for a more stable walking surface.Design tip: With any loose stone, be prepared for some maintenance. While landscape and weed-barrier cloths will keep weed growth down, nothing is foolproof. You will need to periodically remove unwanted plant material. The secret is to do it before things get out of control.
added by Frank Organ to Climbing Plants Suit Small Gardens
Save Space With Upward GrowthPlants brighten up any boundary and make it a bit more interesting. If you don't have space for a hedge or wall shrub, climbers can be great space savers in a small garden — they climb vertically and won't protrude into the yard if you give them a little care and pruning. In this yard, a fast-growing free climber conserves space, and the planting now seems to flow from the beds to the top of the wall in one swift movement.
added by Debra Prinzing to Garden Design Essentials: Balance
A Hybrid ApproachA private, semiformal courtyard illustrates symmetrical balance and a hint of radial balance. Aligned with the urn and the gate, a gravel path moves through the center of this garden, in balance with herbs on both sides. As the path reaches the small, circular focal point, it splits into two matching crescents; they continue around the urn and reconnect on the far side. Adding a circular detail to a straight path is a classic design trick that turns an otherwise ordinary space into something really special.
Likewise, you can use an urn as a focal point in a courtyard or on a patio.
A circle in a square is a classic design motif. Here it is expressed in a beautiful gravel garden. This side yard is wide enough to accommodate a circular focal point (with a well-proportioned urn at its center). There is ample room for Mediterranean herbs and annual bedding plants to flourish along both sides of a pathway, which parts around the center urn and ends at the garden gate.
Start a project file. Take advantage of winter downtime to daydream about home and garden plans. Keeping your ideas organized will help you stay on track to complete your projects, so start by storing everything in one place. A paper file or bulletin board is great for tear sheets, but a basket or box is better for storing bulky samples. You can even create your to-do list in an ideabook. Choose what will work best for you.
Medieval enclosed gardens were enjoyed mainly by the wealthy, who could afford the cost of construction and upkeep, but monastic gardens were also enclosed. Monks required seclusion for their contemplative lives, and the hortus conclusus gave them the required sense of security and seclusion. In this garden of today, the high walls, simple gravel path, seating and low plantings echo some of the elements of the early monastic enclosed garden.
