First the fabric must be mounted and stretched on a frame.A special flat stone or smooth marbal glass is used to smooth out the painting surface after the gesso has been applied to the canvas. The composition of a thangka, as with the majority of Buddhist art, is highly geometric. Arms, legs, eyes, nostrils, ears, and various ritual impleme
nts are all laid out on a systematic grid of angles and intersecting lines. Because the art is explicitly religious, all symbols and allusions must be in accordance with strict guidelines laid out in Buddhist scripture.Once I have completed the drawing, under my direction, each applies their special skill to finish the canvas the traditional Tibetan rules as they apply to thangka painting using the classical text book interpretation. The Silk Brocade Border The thankga is not a flat creation like an oil painting or acrylic painting but consists of a picture panel which is painted or embroidered over which textile is mounted usually from silk. The selection of the silk border is an important part of the process.I select for my thangkas . Each silk panel is selected based on color and brocade design then carefully measured. After the measurements are completed, the silk frame is created. The painted canvas is positioned into the frame and stitched into place. The entire process is done b
y hand. Once positioned it is ready the craftsman to permanently sew the canvas to the silk border.Generally, thankgas last a very long time and retain much of their lustre, but because of their delicate nature, they have to be kept in dry places where moisture wont affect the quality of the silk. .....
