It's a Thanksgiving cactus, and is used as a houseplant, so yes--you can grow it in west Texas!

Plants--Christmas Cactus. Give bright, indirect light (on a covered patio or through a bright window) until Sept./Oct. Reduce light to about 10 hrs a day. Put a box/bag over plant from 6-8PM to imitate short day cycle that is necessary for these plants to set buds for holiday flowering. When buds set, > watering & bring container out to a brightly lit area--never let get soggy.
