This is a colonial style bathroom with a walk in shower behind a glass partition wall. We lowered the foundation to make the tub easier to access. Even though the material application is very 19 century Colonial, the layout and details are very contemporary with a Japanese influence.

Hello, love this bathroom. can you tell me how you accomplished the sunken tub? - Beautiful bathroom, love the sunken tub. Is it a standard height and you sunk it into the ceiling below or is there such thing as a shallow tub? »
KADE Restoration This tub was already inset with the foundation stepping down. If it is new construction, not too hard to do, but if you are looking at a remodel, this is an expensive route, but a really cool detail. Good luck!
KADE Restoration There is a temporary wood piece that is the same thickness of the mirror that is inset into the scratch coat and then the tile is brought to it. When the tile is complete, the wood is removed and the glass installed with matching caulking to the grout right up against the glass. Check with your glass installer for thickness and their ability to have it be structurally sound etc. Good luck!
KADE Restoration Sorry for the delayed reply. We finished it with quarter round. To add some flare, we have the crown molding as a nice finishing touch.
SH interiors Hi. Hard to see in the pic, but typically you would run a tile into the window and trim it with a quarter round, same as the edge of the shower. Hope this helps.
KADE Restoration That question should be answered by an engineer who can visit the site. Try to contact a local engineering company that does residential construction.
Design Freedom, inc. i agree - an architect or engineer at your home would be your best answer. yes, it's possible, but we can't guess how much work might be involved. we just hope you have tall ceilings downstairs.
of course, another solution would be a nice set of wide steps leading to the tub - enough room for towels and shampoo bottles. you could still sit on the tub ledge to turn on the tub faucet.
Beautiful bath with very clean lines. I can't tell from the photo...did you use regular 3x6 white subway tiles or a larger size? Also, what color grout? I am considering doing white tiles in my bath with marble floors. How could I keep white grout clean and not damage the marble with cleaners? Thank you for your time. »
TITHOF tile & marble We sell a cleaner called revitalized. Honed marble not polish ! I am a tile installation company and slab fabricator. I recommend a neutral cleaner to all my clients in Chicago area . Tile is easier to clean than marble. E ail me of you have more questions. We always explain to clients the goods, bads and uglys of stone tiles. We want them happy for years to come
I love the design of this bath room. I am remodeling my house and the contractor said this can only work with a slab foundation, otherwise leaks will occur along the side of the bathtub due to the shower. Is this true? Or can this bathroom be made over a basement or crawlspace without leakage concerns? »
Your contractor has a valid concern. This design was much easier with a slab on grade foundation. I don't know your current structural situation for the area you want to try this out. In order to make it feasible it may take some considerable upgrading of the underlying structure or may be an easy alteration. Either way, you want a structural engineer to take a look at that. Another concern is the sewer line draining from a sunken down tub and allowing for head room in the basement below. As for waterproofing, if the structure below is solid, you should be able to have it water proofed and hot mopped to be water tight. If you have anymore questions, you may email me at info@krestore.com. Good luck!
3D-Tile-Design - Bertram Tasch Hi KADE,
Sorry, I mixed up the names. - Byaco's contractor has not a valid concern, he said "this can ONLY work with a slab foundation, otherwise leaks will occur along the side of the bathtub due to the shower." And this statement is wrong. You are absolutely right. There are many things to consider! And it may cost way more than a regular bathroom. But it isn't impossible. The question is just: How far will Byako go to realize his dream bath?
KADE Restoration Those are carrera marble shelves approximately 12" deep, 24" long and inset into the mortar bed of the tile with the tile inset around them. It is a very clean detail which is hard to accomplish with such soft stone. The marble should be covered until the grout is complete. Good luck!
Dimensions? - Hi, just wondering if you remember the whole bathroom dimensions? It is a similar size to ours and hoping we have enough room to have this same design... »
LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea for a jack and jill bathroom for the 2nd floor. this is a japanese style shower/tub where they are enclosed in the same area side-by-side
