Angela Otten; WmOhs Showrooms Inc Sure~ you can use this treatment in just about any common room. Without seeing your space I can't give you advice on how to use it~ I would recommend hiring a local designer to help you with that decision.
Wondering if it is possible to gain ceiling height by adding boxes into the rafters to make this coffered look - This is new construction and the rafters are still open. Would rather go up into the rafters to gain ceiling height. Can this look be achieved by doing that and if so how? Thanks for the help. »
wlg3 Thank you for the quick response. My joists are 24" apart and are centered in the room. I have a steep pitch so there is a lot of space in the attic. Could you suggest a good depth for the individual boxes. Thank you again.
Angela Otten; WmOhs Showrooms Inc Just a comment; on 24" cc joists; you will only have 22.5" between them. Please be careful that the squares are not too small~ they will look like a checkerboard rather than the treatment above. The photo shows 36x42" rectangles. If you do it at your width; the shallower the better; 4" or less.
Angela Otten; WmOhs Showrooms Inc The floors are oak with a custom stain mixed to get to this color. Your flooring contractor will put several colors down on the raw wood floor to let you choose from. You can ask them to tweak the color darker, lighter, more brown, yellow, orange, etc to get to the right color and value.
I just installed a mahogany ceiling like this and used a minwax stain to darken it - trying to decided if it needs a low luster finish as well..... this ceiling looks beautiful, but it's hard to tell how much of a finish it has - did you use a sealant? »
Angela Otten; WmOhs Showrooms Inc The contractor did the ceiling work~ I'm not sure about his technique, however I would recommend getting some extra material and experimenting until you get the right color / sheen.
vermeer_day Here is an image of construction of a coffered ceiling using 2 x 4's and 1 x 4's. The molding attached would have to be smaller than the 1x 4, which is only 4" in name, it is really 3 1/2 inches tall. If you are building it yourself you could play around with the molding of your choice, but it would be somewhere in the range of 2 1/2 to 3" if you are trying to achieve this look.
