I also think it's possible to bring subtle hints of tree designs into the home without actually choosing realistic tree designs to do it. This rug is a great example. The curves and lines in its design really look tree-like to me but the effect isn't as strong as it would be if the rug really had a tree depicted on it.
I like that this room is very simple, except for the rug. That gives the room's owner a ton of flexibility to change the whole space just by swapping out the rug.

This is close to what the 5 x 8 will look like...no legs will be on the furniture except maybe the front legs of the sofa (sorry I cannot remember exactly where 8 feet would hit on the sofa)
