Anne DeCocco I think it depends on the look and mood you're going for and the lighting in the space. Obviously, dark floors work beautifully as the photo shows. But a lighter wood floor would also look great and bring more contrast to the cabinetry.

bepsf I'm certain the kitchen cabinets above are in a satin finish - not a semi-gloss....
...and I wouldn't do a semi-gloss finish on cabinetry again unless it was sprayed - I've found that it tends to orange peel too much whereas a satin finish has just a bit less gloss but still has a nice glow and finishes more smoothly when using the same type of low-nap roller.
