erolstad Thank you. I absolutely love all of your designs. I am going to redo my kitchen in white and add a very similar island. I am debating keeping my current cabinets and painting them but they are not flush mount and have dental molding. Do you think that would kill the design?
Castro Design Studio I am sorry, I do not recall the exact size. The pantry is actually located outside the view of this photo, through a standard door.
Lighting - Hi,
I love your work and you are so helpful :-). Do you prefer not having pendant lights hanging over the kitchen island? I cannot decide if I want them or not. Too many decision to be made! »
Castro Design Studio Thank you! It is really up to the owner... In this kitchen we did end up adding decorative fixtures after the photos were taken in order to create a little separation between the kitchen and family room. You do not need them if you have enough can lights, but it is an easy way to add detail to a space if you feel you need it. I will sometimes not do hanging fixtures but instead do lamps on the island...
susanhaeley1 We are building a house and chose Kashmir White as our counter top. We have stained black island, maple glazed cabinets and love this backsplash. We are however installing a pot filler. Do you have any suggestions on how to do so? Not sure if we could install it with the wide plank backsplash, or do we need some sort of stone behind the cooktop.
Thanks again,
lenapehomeideas I also wanted to say how grateful I am for your kindness and generosity in answering all of our questions about your designs. I'm building a home in Austin, TX, and little things you take the time to do, like sharing paint colors, truly saves a non-designer like myself so much stress and guesswork when trying to emulate a look you've achieved. Your warmth really translates into the work you do...Thanks again!!
May I ask the source for your island granite? - I want that exact granite but the largest I've been able to find it is about 9.5 x 4.5. I need it in 10x5 or 6. Thanks so much! »
Paint - What color did you paint the walls and ceiling? Is it all timid white but in different finishes? Do you recommend painting a house like this if you are going for the white look? Thanks for your help! »
Castro Design Studio The ceiling is flat, and I believe everything else is "eggshell". Paint is very tricky, and will vary a lot depending on your lighting. I recommend you experiment with different shades and finishes on site to determine what works best for you.
Would you please give me the details on this cabinetry style? - Where did you order the cabinetry from? What type? What is the style of the decorative uppers on the left and right? And the paint color? Thanks so much! »
Kelric Construction I am guessing, but I have lots of experience in kitchens, and I think that wall is:
24" + 30" + 36" + 30" + 24" = 144" so 12' of cabinets
Douglas Upham I am in the process of designing our range hood very similar to the one above. I had planned on using reclaimed barn board horizontally and I am having difficulty locating a proper range hood insert. Can you tell me approx cost and brand name of the one used in the photo. Thanks in advance
Castro Design Studio I usually recommend a "Vent A Hood" liner, six inches larger than the range or cooktop it will serve. The decorative portion is then "built" over it. I am not sure how much the liners cost, you should probably check with your local distributor for that information.
Castro Design Studio The island is 6' x 10'. We were able to source an over sized slab, so it does not have a seam. If you are unable to get an over sized slab you can get a seam that is almost invisible if you have a good installer, and good matching slabs.
amazing space, beautiful job! Can you share what the color and brand of floor is? We are looking for engineered floors around this color/style - love the look you pulled together. »
Do you know the name of the granite you chose - I am in the same position - love the look of marble but afraid that we will ruin it - I have been searching for a white granite without success. Thank you so much!!!! »
Specialty Tile Products Check out drytreat's sealers @ www.drytreat.com. It is an amazing sealer that can make a white marble countertop completely durable...
Granite Grannies If you're searching for white granite, try looking at "quartzite." It's a completely natural material (to be distinguished from man made "quartz") that is as durable as granite, but tends to look more like white marbles (Super White Quartzite and White Macaubas Quartzite) and sometimes even like onyx (Taj Mahal Quartzite)
lmsanmartin We are building a home and my Island is 5x10 I love carrara marble but I'm concerned with the maintenance and wear and tear on the marble. My fabricator says Dupont has a sealer that has a 15 year guarantee on staining on marble and granite have you heard about this product and if so does it work?
davismom3 We have honed white granite counter tops that were sealed immediately after installation. We have had zero issues with staining or etching! We spilled red wine on it and even left tomato sauce overnight! It cleans up like new!!
Consider going extra wide. If you’ve got a big kitchen, don’t be afraid to go for a big island, especially if it will be used for both cooking and entertaining. There’s rarely too much counter space. (Just be sure you can reach what you need from the cooking zone.)
This is white everything. I really think it needs some contrast color somewhere. That's why I prefer the Black Granite with the White Cabinets and the White Granite with the Dark Cabinets.
