One of the best rooms in a traditional home is a dark-paneled library, complete with beautiful books, comfortable leather furniture and brass accents. Traditionalists know the best way to cozy up the floor is to cover it in an antique Oriental rug; this is one aspect of traditional design I doubt will ever change.

Wood paneling: Warm wood walls are iconic. It doesn't matter whether they're original Old-World panels or '70s remakes — I think they're fabulous either way. This dark moody room feels like a library but might double as the TV room.

Get the look: Elements of this rich and warm style are common in many homes today. Try playing with patterns and textures while staying within the same color palette.
