Wow, that is some helpful info. I am trying to find a local steel supplier that has sheeting long enough to fold the edges and skin a normal garage door so I can add a finish I want. I will ask about the paint grip coated steel. I am in southern utah so I don't think shipping would be cost effective from Texas to here but you never know. I have an 18x8 garage door opening. Thanks for your help.

Cowart Door Systems
I am afraid that it is more complex than that.

The door must have a tongue and groove nesting configuration (not all garage doors are so configured). We use a CHI 2284 or CHI 2217 flush sandwich construction insulated door. The 22 - 24 ga cladding must be wrap onto the top and bottom of the base of the T&G. It must be fully secured over the entire surface with structural adhesive and riveted top and bottom to prevent peeling or bubbling.

The spring included in a overhead door system is calibrated for the weight and height of the door. The cladding will significantly increase the door weight and new springs must be specified. After cladding, we accurately weigh the door sections and hardware using a digital load cell and procure springs appropriate for the door weight/height.

Safety is paramount. An 18x8 door is pretty heavy in std config. Our clad doors are equipped with commercial hardware/track/springs/hinges/cables & the best rollers and additional wind struts to handle the increased door mass. If you are thinking about cladding your existing door the odds are that it was not designed for this conversion. I do not mean to be a naysayer, but I really do think this kind of project is best left to a local OHD pro in Utah who has experience in this type custom door. I can honestly tell you that the 1st couple of our projects involved building more door sections than actually ended up on the finished product :-(.

Best of Luck. Be safe.

We simply stretched tight a 2x4 wire fence between the posts. Hope that helps. Geoff
