Mark English Architects, AIA There have never been any problems, the downdraft hood works very well.

lk_designs Downdraft stoves are not very common (or very popular) here in Australia. It is much more common to put the sink in the island and in fact I haven't seen a stove/range in the centre island (that's not to say they don't exist here in Aust!). We do have very strict building codes especially here in my state of Victoria. Stoves have to have fire proofing around them.

lisagphillips Mark - your thoughts on downdrafts? and preferred brand? i'm about to go this route and pretty nervous about it! however i hate the ceiling spaceships enough i think to give it a go. suggestions?

Mark English Architects, AIA in my experience, downdrafts work for the casual cook, but not the serious cook, or certain ethnic cuisine. We've used threader in the past.

Mark English Architects, AIA Hi, these ar German pre-finished cabinets. Typically, German and Italian hi-gloss cabinets are made of MDF with several to many layers of Lacquer paint over them.

Lily Gahagan Good points, Ronique! My two cents:

Gas is the choice of most professional cooks as you have better control of the temperature when you're cooking. It also heats the bottom of your cookware more evenly. I recently switched from a gas stove to electric (due to a change of apartments), and I must say, there's a learning curve. In my experience electric cooktops take longer to heat up, and temperature control is difficult. If there are any avid electric cooktop fans out there, please share why you prefer it over gas!
