Ronique Gibson This is chalkboard paint used to paint the wall. If you tape off your sidewalls/trim/baseboards with painters tape (blue tape), you should be fine.
Use drop cloths on the floor and over your big pieces of furniture, and try and keep your paint brush clean (meaning no drips down the side as you "cut in" or paint around the trim.
Annie Thornton As someone who as already attempted a chalkboard accent wall, I speak from personal failure with painters tape, so I have gathered a few improved tips on how to get a clean line for your wall color. One technique still utilizes blue painters tape to mask the edges. Mask a straight line with the tape, but allow a 1/8"-1/16" gap between the wall to be painted and the painters tape. With a cauking gun and paintable cauk, rub a thin film from the tape into the corner of the wall to be painted and let dry before painting. If this sounds too labor intensive, another technique is to cut the paint edge with a stiff bristle brush before using the roller. Cut in the paint edge an inch or two, then go for the roller. Happy painting!

Tami Timmons I have been intrested some in the wood look like tiles...in the photo, it almost seems like there are darker grout lines in between the planks, so I thought it could possibly be that type of flooring. I think the idea is great with the wood look tile idea, but getting the grout color just right is what could make or break the look. Regardless of what it is, I love when the floors are either a bit lighter or darker (espresso) than the normal browner tones most homes have installed.
This family must have a lot to say! The entire space is a great example of the power of a black and white color palette in design, softened just slightly by the pale wood floors. I would enjoy eating a sandwich sitting at this island, while reading through the notes on the wall!
Even if you love the look of a black wall, it can be a little nerve-wracking to take the plunge and paint your walls in the non-color. Dark chalkboard gray feels much more approachable, and if it's too dark, you can always cure it with lots of chalk.
Cottage kitchens are often tiny and require clever storage solutions. This designer has kept things simple with the black-and white palette, then allowed for some fun with the chalkboard wall.
