mybuttercup Heehee to the irony of telling someone to "judge less"! And the greatest commandment is "Love one another" : ) As for you Buhdda, the great I am who exists in the plural is but one - the ultimate reality.
Christopher Sullivan The Buddha is appropriate in all places. To think otherwise, is to be ignorant of the teachings of the Buddha. Did the Buddha not crap? If we are to attain enlightenment, we must maintain equilibrium in all places. The places we wrongfully judge as being impure, are the most appropriate spaces to place the Buddha, to remind ourselves of the enlightenment we seek. Once you have achieved enlightenment, only then can you say what is "disrespectful" to the enlightened one (my guess: not much). The ninth-century Buddhist master Lin Chi is supposed to have said, “If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him.” While I continue to ponder the meaning of that, I'll do so in the bathroom, as well as the living room, kitchen, bedroom, garden, chicken coop, and the car, all of which I share with (various forms of) the Buddha. If that offends you, you're probably confusing Buddhism with religion. But that's okay, because even that probably doesn't offend the Buddha.
su79 @lynnie44 - As a Buddhist, I see your hurt at seeing Buddha statues being used as decorative items, once I saw a Buddha statue with a frog's head in a store to sell as bathroom decor.
But as Christopher Sullivan says before me, Buddhism was never meant to be a Religion, [and that's why it's never been enforced under gunpoint (yet).] What Buddha preached has always been common sense and his teachings/philosophy was never supposed to be embolized by materialistic things, certainly not statues which were taken as "sacred" But human nature by nature need things to hold on to - tangible things or "beliefs" that either a god or some higher power has the power to control what happens to us - has made such "sacred" objects necessary.
So whenever I see a Buddha statue being used as decor - I simply think how can such an act take away the truth or the essence of Buddha's teachings.only our actions as Buddhists can.
So think WWBD (what would Buddha do) -JK- We really needn't bother.
Where did you get the carved stone floral panels from? - Was the panels custom or store bought? If it was custom who and where were they done?
Thanks in advance! »
bigbang1 I live in Chicago - any idea where I could get something like this? I purchased some beautiful things from a store in palm springs called "hello bali" but the store closed and I haven't been able to find the owner. He brought beautiful things from Bali.
kidzdoc This was tough to find, but I believe they are made by Ironware International.
The web site is only available to registered designers (which I am not) and are available "to the trade only". Here are 2 sites I found:
maxima You could achieve the same look by buying carved out panels from Pier 1 Imports or World Market and then paint them a light color. I like them too!
how would you like lord jesus lying next to loo? - not one washroom in houzz.com shows a jesus in there for your peace of mind , which you surprisingly find in a budha., c,mon become a budhist outside your bathrooms too, or simply regard the religion of others too.. I am sorry to my loving lord Jesus for this apparent show of disregard to him, which is not at all intended., and iam never gonna put any idol of worship in a place of ablution.. god bless u mindless stylists!! »
2. Altar-like alcoves. Traditional Japanese style rooms feature a tokonoma, an alcove to display special art on scrolls and flower arrangements. This alcove, possibly inspired by such a niche, actually contains a window and the carved floral art looks like shutters.
There is something spa-like about a space that features a big natural element made of wood or reminiscent of stone. Light paint and a large harmonious sculpture turns this room into a retreat.
