2011 EcoHome Design Award Winner
Key to the successful design were the homeowner priorities of family health, energy performance, and optimizing the walk-to-town construction site. To maintain health and air quality, the home features a fresh air ventilation system with energy recovery, a whole house HEPA filtration system, radiant & radiator heating distribution, and low/no VOC materials. The home’s energy performance focuses on passive heating/cooling techniques, natural daylighting, an improved building envelope, and efficient mechanical systems, collectively achieving overall energy performance of 50% better than code. To address the site opportunities, the home utilizes a footprint that maximizes southern exposure in the rear while still capturing the park view in the front.

Lisa K. Tharp - K. Tharp Design The tile leans toward a sandy beige, as I wanted to keep the mix of beach-meets-farmhouse influences running throughout. Image tag has more detail on source. This tile also does come in grey hues, if interested.

Although you can't see it in the photos, this master bathroom also incorporates a laundry room. "Laundry rooms used to be placed in basements, then they moved to the first floor, and today, we realize it's most convenient to have it on the same floor as the bedrooms, where we put our clothes away," Horowitz explains. This makes getting clothes from one's body to the washer a breeze. Between stripping down and popping into the shower, clothes can be placed in the color sorting bins or directly into the washing machine.

I asked the contractor to cover this focal wall with wide v-groove board, much like I used in the home's kitchen at the backsplash and gable peaks. I had the board painted a creamy white using non-toxic Mythic Paint. I like to add visual texture to walls, especially when designing with simple materials and varying shades of white. Other textures, such as the warm wood accents, keep this room from feeling cold or sterile. I like using horizontal plank (vs. the vertical I used downstairs) for a more casual, beachy feel.
