This kitchen, first featured in this home tour, was designed by Colorado designer Andrea Schumacher. From the start, her client knew that she didn't want to have an all-white kitchen, so Schumacher mixed it up with custom Stark wallpaper and a brilliant emerald island, painted in Benjamin Moore's Cat's Eye.

In the kitchen, a custom wallpaper by Stark and a jewel-toned island are a departure from the all-white kitchen we're used to seeing paired with white cabinets and marble countertops.

The clients knew right off the bat they didn't want their home to have yet another all-white kitchen. Although some of the cabinetry is white and white Calcutta marble was installed on the countertops and stove backsplash, Schumacher decided to use the island and wall space to implement bold color. The wallpaper is a custom, hand-painted work of art from Stark. It took almost a year for Schumacher to get the wallpaper, which was hand-painted on silk in China. After the wallpaper was installed, Schumacher had it sealed with Proseal, which allows the wallpaper to act as a backsplash. "You can throw spaghetti at it and it'll clean right off," she says. I don’t think people would think twice about using a custom wallpaper design like this in their bathroom or even a bedroom, but many would have shied away from using it in the kitchen. 1. A fashionable mix. Just like a DJ that's sampling tunes or a fashionista mixing clothing, attempting the art of the mix can go awry on a drop of a dime. It can become a cacophony of sound or a clashing of pattern on pattern. Believe it or not, eclectic design actually involves a ton of restraint, and I'm not sure about others, but for me it involves a lot of trial-and-error editing. This kitchen's mix-master elements: its simple farmhouse-style cabinets, butcher block top and bar stools mixed with the elegant glass chandeliers and marble countertops, and a dash of whimsy thrown in with the wallpaper and bright colors.

5. Deck the walls. Apply your favorite wall covering to your kitchen walls for fascinating flair. Make sure the one you choose is durable and washable — you'll thank yourself on spaghetti night.

Ultramarine green works with traditional, contemporary and all design styles in between. This kitchen has a nice balance of neutral and bold colors.

A flat, cool kelly green gives this kitchen so much punch. And it looks great with the blue of a similar tone. It's modern and inviting.

If you decide to add a small island or island cart in the kitchen you can add color this way. Instead of painting all your cabinets a green color, save it for the island for a nice pop. Plus, this isn't your forever house so it might be best to keep a few things a little more standard for the next tenant :)
