What color of the oriental rug will go with red sofa - I'm shopping for area rugs and cannot decide on color. I love persian serapi's. Any suggestions? »
What type of mounting process is there for the desk/backsplash into the wall? - We're trying to get two desks onto a 7'10" space, and we love the idea of creating the floating desk on the wall. My wife wants to just anchor the "desk" part to the wall & put some filing cabinets in the middle to support it. Is that a feasible idea? (I'm no handyman, but I love trying to figure this stuff out with expert help.) »
handee9 Thanks folks - appreciate the quick feedback. I'll be sure to let you know how we approach. David Nieman - can you describe exactly how those cabinets are fastened to the desk? It looks fairly seamless in the pictures; what's the trick?
BeautifulRemodel.com Hi Handee9 - you may want to try a 2x2 painted cleat on the wall instead of a 1x2. The 2x2 enables you to screw vertically through the bottom of it into the bottom of the desk. (make sure your screw length won't protrude through the top of course :) When the 2x nears the front edge of the counter, angle it back at a 45*.
You would still screw horizontally through the 2x2 into the wall studs as Da Vinci suggested.
As for the best way to attach the cabinetry to the counter, that is done in a similar way, you screw vertically through the top of the cabinet into the substrate of the counter, again with the correct length screw.
With all of the screws you install, countersink the holes first with an appropriately sized bit.
David Neiman Architects The room is 12' wide. The center cabinet is 3' wide and the knee spaces on either side are 4'-6" wide. The tabletop is 30" deep and the base cabinet is only 24" deep, which leaves some room behind the cabinet for chasing cords & cables back & forth
Anthony Giunta Jr. If you are really crunched for space you could get by with a 24-30" knee well space if you had to. The counter depth minimums vary depending on whether you are using a laptop and if you want cabinets with drawers, as drawer slides come in particular lengths. Many stock modular cabinet manufactures offer both 20"&24" depths but sometimes will customize to shallower depths.
Keyboard shelves help keep surfaces more clear. Sometimes a big behemoth of a desktop computer hogs up way too much of the actual desktop. If you are buying new computers, work with the salesperson to minimize the electronic bulk in your office.
Gorgeous built-ins allow a couple to work together side by side or as partners in a home business. The clean lines and the gold and warm green tones of the space invite me to sit right down and start my work day.
Create an information hub. "This small office is what we call the information center in the house," says architect David Neiman. "As computers have become an indispensable part of our lives, incorporating an info center into the main floor of the house has become standard."He adds, "The info center is a place where you leave the computers on, set up a plug-in station for your phones, put your printer in the pedestal. It's where your kids do their homework, where the parents do their bills, where you hop over to look up a recipe or answer a question that comes up over dinner. And the room has sliding doors so you can close it off when you need some privacy, or you don't want your guests to look at the stack of mail on the desktop."
