This San Juan Islands retreat is based on the idea of camp. It provides places to come together as a family and ways of retreating into small personal spaces. A main house has four public spaces arranged along a central axis – the kitchen, dining room, living room, and den. Behind these more generous spaces are a fireplace inglenook, mud room, laundry, office, and bath. Other buildings in the compound include a master cabin, writer’s hut, guest cabin, barn, and picnic shelter. With the exception of the barn, the buildings are located along a contour of the sloped site and connected between and through the buildings by a continuous path.

This hearth changes this already pleasant space into a deliberate place to gather and warm up in the evening chill. It completely creates the ambience, taking the burden of the need to set up the space off of the host.
Build for the entire family. A rustic picnic table, large stone fireplace and hearth make this all about gatherings. I can just imagine summer evenings with the adults hanging out around the table and children roasting marshmallows in the fire.
A picnic shelter wards off the notorious Northwest coolness with an inviting fireplace. "The wood for the picnic shelter was made from trees felled on the site and dried during the course of construction of the main house," Hoedemaker says. "The table and bench were made from the same wood."
This is outdoor dining in its simplest and most elegant form. Covered and yet open, this space offers just enough room for dining. While other cooking has to be accomplished indoors, this is a perfect fire pit for pizza and other open-flame meals.
This rustic structure needs little more than a picnic table to make for a cozy gathering.
Tip: Candles are an entertaining necessity both indoors and outside. Not only does everyone look better in the flickering light, they also add a sense of intimacy to any gathering.
If summer got away from you, autumn provides you with a final opportunity to dine alfresco. Spark a warm fire or set the atmosphere with the intimacy of candlelight.
