This San Juan Islands retreat is based on the idea of camp. It provides places to come together as a family and ways of retreating into small personal spaces. A main house has four public spaces arranged along a central axis – the kitchen, dining room, living room, and den. Behind these more generous spaces are a fireplace inglenook, mud room, laundry, office, and bath. Other buildings in the compound include a master cabin, writer’s hut, guest cabin, barn, and picnic shelter. With the exception of the barn, the buildings are located along a contour of the sloped site and connected between and through the buildings by a continuous path.

Log Set? - Is this by chance a log set? If so, I would love to know the brand and model.....gorgeous! Thank you. »
Does this raised hearth go the length of the wall? If not, how wide is it? I want to build a raised hearth on my fireplace and the entire wall will be stone on a gable end just like in this image. I want to flank the fireplace with two matching chests or tall pieces. It's difficult to know how wide to make the hearth without it looking awkward. »
Any room that has a fireplace is a good room to be in when it's rainy and wet outside! Light a fire in the bedroom and spend time with your lover or light one in the family room and get out the board games.
Not every manly space can have such an iconic fireplace, but a few subtleties that surround it are easily adaptable. The wood is not only stored on the hearth, it's also stored keenly underneath it. The folded blanket is left out for use, and the pillow—while bright—sticks with the theme.
Hoedemaker calls this a fireplace inglenook. "[It] was designed to be both a fireplace and a room," he explains. "And the location of the room centers on the dining room, offering the warmth and ambiance of the fire when dining."
Focus on the fireplace. So much of what happens at the cabin is centered around the fireplace. Be original with the stone. To create a tumbled, organic look, have your stone mason recess the grout so that the fireplace looks to be dry stacked. A raised hearth creates extra seating and a place to store firewood. Next to a roaring fire is also a great place to sneak in a bed.
everything about this is awesome! Stone walls and fireplace that is also huge, hearth with wood storage underneath, dark wood ceiling wiith beams...small close space with home in every inch for me. and a bench built in with pillows and throw a d cushioned pad....this is perfect
