SF Design & Build @Marie, of course it is, and if it's your client's, I wanna see a smile on your face. And when you deposit their check, you can tell the bank teller all about your lousy bad taste client. Bank tellers love a good story.
Marie Hebson's interiorsBYDESIGN Inc. @ SF Design - LOL - true, only concern SF is my clients depend on me to guide them in their choices and steer them clear of decisions that will detract from the overall value of their home. We all know taste is a matter of perception - and, like art, is in the eye of the beholder. If these clients for this home are happy - and it is there forever home - then fabulous. My opinion is the contrary - we have cabinetry with the grain running horizontal on door fronts, and vertical on end gables - with the grain not even matching from bottom to top!, then we have different colour/tone on the floor (not complimenting), with another grain in the marble countertops. It's too much of a similar vibe, and its rendering all of them to be dull - rather than taking each individual item and making them as absolutely beautiful as they deserve to be... Gotta run - have an amazing day - I love constructive criticism, its how we all hone our crafts and become better professionals - cheers!
folklaur Thanks. I'm still not sure if I can commit to grey. I have always liked this kitchen, but we are not the kind of folks who can replace our kitchen every 5 years. Wondering if it will look "so 2012" in a few years.
WHat backsplash would go well with this cabinetry? - I am doing a similar kitchen but I am using Caesarstone blizzard for the countertops and think it may be too stark without a backsplash. Glass tiles? Would love suggestions...I am using a wide plank rustic floor... »
Can natural white oak floors go with dark cabinets? - I have the nexus black-brown Ikea cabinets. What do you think about having natural white oak floors with them? »
salling This is a quartz counter top by perhaps Silestone or Cesearstone. This is the latest trend in modern and has a lot of benefits over granite. One of the benefits is you dont need to seal quartz like you have to do with granite every few months.
If these floors are not stained, what sealer was used? I am currently testing my raw white oak wood with different sealers and the color is turning pink! »
Rebekah Zaveloff That's most likely a proprietary cabinet finish from the cabinet manufacturer. I think that Poggenpohl cabinets have a finish similar finish to this.
Kumar Iyer this material is melamine chipboard made by a company called Cleaf from Italy. The name is LAVA TEAK and as rightly pointed out was launched by Poggenpohl about 2-3 years ago. Goes well with a glossy white combination
Paul Anater It depends on how closely scribed your counter is. Backsplashes are usually there to hide and cover the gap between the counter and the wall. If you can minimize the width of that gap and then caulk it completely, you don't need a back splash.
texasmo If you look at the photo closely, you can just barely see a horizontal line about 24" off the countertop. With the slight green tint below, I'd guess they used a sheet of glass as a backsplash, which is fairly common when one doesn't want 'busy' tile in a clean lines kitchen.
I like your idea of unstained white oak floors with grey cabinets. What brand of hardwood would you recommend? And solid hardwood or engineered? thank you! »
Unstained white oak with gray: Natural white oak and gray are natural partners. This combination works well in a modern space or in a vintage application where the gray is the wall color or painted cabinetry. Unstained white oak can have almost ashy tone which complements the grays when used together.
5. Reliance on the beauty of natural materials. It's not to say that modern kitchens can't have a little bit of ornamentation, but when they do, they get it from the natural characteristics in a material, such as the horizontal grain of oak when it's rift cut or the natural beauty and veining of marble.
The Lava Teak melamine chipboard by Cleaf from Italy and launched by Poggenpohl is both modern and earthy (think Big Sur). Notice the warm yellowish tones?
