Not everyone likes to see shoes lined up on a shelf, and if you're one of them, consider retrofitting a current closet with cubbies. This will offer you the same storage benefits while providing discreetness, thanks to the doors.
We need a closet for shoes, umbrellas etc. There is some room behind main door. Some chipping of the wall might be need to get enough depth. What we liked in this design is generous space given for each block. However all cubes will not be help storing umbrella and other long ones.
You could also do just shelves for more flexability: http://www.allmodern.com/Hokku-Designs-Hess-Studio-Five-Shelf-Shoe-Cabinet-in-Red-Cocoa-FM-21451-KUI2126.html?piid%5B%5D=
