What Houzz contributors are saying:
added by Bud Dietrich, AIA to Getting it Wright: Today's Prairie Style
The Huertley House of 1902 designed by Frank Lloyd Wright represents an early Prairie style home. The hip roof with deep overhangs, emphasis on horizontal lines, ribbon windows and central chimney mass are all features of the style.
First let's briefly discuss some of these 20th-century precursors of modern and contemporary architecture. One of the most influential architects of all time is Frank Lloyd Wright, who lived in Oak Park early in his career and built numerous houses there and in other parts of Chicago. This 1902 house in Oak Park is an example of his Prairie style, which uses strong horizontal lines, overhanging roofs, and other distinctive features to relate the house to the region's landscape. This influence can be found in both traditional and modern architecture today.
added by Bud Dietrich, AIA to Timeline of American House Styles
It's not surprising that Frank Lloyd Wright's first works, such as his Oak Park home, were in the Shingle Style because that was the first step in the creation of the Prairie Style. Low, long and all horizontal, the house is no longer a collection of box-like rooms. It's a totally new way of creating domestic spaces that celebrated the open and connected rather than the closed and cave-like.
added by Bud Dietrich, AIA to Great Materials: Common Brick Stacks Up Style
Use brick decoratively. Brick comes in any color and size imaginable. So vary the color, size, placement and location when laying a brick wall. Also consider changes to the mortar joints. By changing colors at different courses and by deeply raking the horizontal joints while filling the vertical joints flush, Frank Lloyd Wright achieved amazing visual effects.
Of course, it was the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright and the other Prairie School architects to resolve — or exploit — the tension caused by the duality between horizontal and vertical. While creating homes that seem to float on the land and in which every design decision serves to accentuate the horizontal, even Wright couldn't help but create that massive central vertical anchor that firmly roots the home to its place.
added by Bud Dietrich, AIA to Water Table
The Prairie school architects, most notably Frank Lloyd Wright, used water tables as important design elements. Tall and dramatically shaped, the water table shown here not only sheds water but is an important horizontal band that reinforces the overall architectural design.

The first architect that I took notice of is Frank Lloyd Wright. I visited several of his homes in Chicago and decided that I still like them, but couldn't live in one. Before my visit I wanted to find one that I could buy.
