This may be too traditional for you, but the open space beneath is great in small spaces. It gives a small space an airier feel which can make it appear larger.
I don't like this look but I like a "true" sectional - L shape - not sure - there is more room in a n L shaped sectional - this cuts off the seating space - I woul awna to have 3 "main' seats and then the "chaise"
