We stained the wood, a tongue and V groove 1 x 6, allowed it to dry, painted the boards with the paint used for trim and hand sanded removing some of the paint, and used a clear satin finish sealer over the surfaces. We have done other items with stain and two coats of paint that were different colors. The sanding reveals the base paint coat, undercoat of paint and stain in an aged - distressed look.

We have also used a base paint color (no stain), applied a different overcoat color, and applied a Sherwin Williams crackling product that produces an aged look crack surface in the overcoat color exposing the base color through the cracks.

All of these were relatively easy, and though our painter was a pro, could be accomplished by a DIYer (read instructions for the crackle look as timing is critical.
