Two Silver-Plated Chased Fern Pots, c. 1880

These two silver-plated fern pots are decorated in complementary rather than identical styles. Both have ruffled tops. One is adorned with chased floral and leaf decoration with sections of scalloped reeding. The other alternates vertical bands of curved reeding with bands of chased scrolled leaf decoration. The undersides of both pots bear a maker's mark for Atkins Brothers of Sheffield, England. Each, 3.625Dia. x 2.625T. From England. Historical BackgroundWith chasing, silver is moved with a small pointed tool and a small mallet. Silver is not removed, but designs are drawn in the metal using the tool and mallet. This method is also used to produce a textured background in the design.
