Wooden jewelry box was hand carved in Northern Italy.Ornate zigzag and bead carving frames the lid, sides, and working drawer; diamond-shaped carvings in the same patterns adorn each end of the box and the front of the drawer.Red velvet covers the drawer front, the narrow framed space above the drawer, two areas on the back of the box, and an area on the top of the lid.Parquetry inlay accents the area between the carved frames on the front and back of the box and around the lower edge of the lid. Most of the lid is covered with parquetry inlay as are the ends of the box.Tiny brass floral medallions with ring handles act as drawer pulls while the back of the box features a small lion medallion with a ring in the lion's mouth. Both the lid and the drawer have working locks; keys are included. Locks, escutcheons, and hinges are brass. The box sits on four brass paw feet. The inside of the box has been given new red velvet lining with braided trim. The inside of the lid is painted wood and holds a red-velvet-framed mirror. The jewelry box shows wear appropriate to age and normal use. The wood surrounding the mirror is cracked in places and the mirror is streaked with age. One back foot is broken and bent slightly; one front foot is missing a screw, which makes it a bit loose. The bottom of the box is cracked in two places.13.5W x 10.75D x 7.75T.
